April 2010 Update
"As of the date of this report the students are all at home for their first weeks vacation, for the "Holy Week" as they refer to it, here in Honduras. We are pleased to report that we have seen a substantial decrease in the number of dropouts, as of this calendar date, than in years past. With this decrease we are hoping to see an increase in exam scores in this marking period, as well; marked by an increase in their desires to be here and learn, appreciating the quality education that they are receiving. The atmosphere in Plan Escalon is something than can only be experienced to be appreciated however; we are working hard this year to increase an atmosphere of love and learning. We want to continue to increase their quality of life and increase their vision for the future.
We are pleased to report that this years building project, adding on to the boys' dorms, is started and making progress. The ground has been broken and the preparation to pour footings has been started. We estimate the cost of this project to be around $7,500 and are praying that God will provide the funds needed.
Also in March, the Business Marketing students launched their business; from March thru June they spend half of the day putting into practice what they have learned in the classroom; the logistics of starting and running a business. These are the third year career students or seniors, as they would be called in the U.S. This business venture is a part of their graduation requirements for the year and was a step out of the norm! They desired to do something a little more venturous than other classes in the past. Here in Honduras one of the normal breakfasts consists of coffee and some form or another of a pastry, so this year's senior business students decided to open their own bakery. They have many different recipes and variations, all of which have been a success. A commercial size oven was purchased and their kitchen is set up in the new science building, which also holds the classrooms and labs for the Business-Marketing students.
As a side note this business venture has been the birthing of yet another business opportunity for Lifesong-Honduras. We are currently in the process of building a small "concession stand", which will serve as a permanent housing of the "bakery" and continue to function and serve as a source of income for the ministry.
To finish out this report, each year we take our senior class, consisting of around 70 students, on ministry missions outreach adventures throughout the year. In the second week of April a group of 32 students were taken to the village of Aguacate where they worked hard to install PVC to each home in to provide water to the entire village. Then, we hiked for another 30 minutes to a village call "Negro Norte" which is actually across the border into Guatemala and shared the Word of God, ministered to individuals in prayer and through food provisions. They had a piņata for the children and each student is required to bring something of his or her own to give away, as a reminder of where they all have come from. It is our desire to show our students the importance of giving back to the community."
