You Asked. We Answered: What Adoption Agencies Do You Recommend?

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive: “What adoption agencies do you recommend?”

We know the process of choosing a program can be daunting. Here are four steps we encourage you to take to get started.

1. Pray about it.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5). Prayer may seem like the obvious place to start, but it can be easy to overlook prayer in the rush to research. Remember: God has a plan and wants you to know what it is.

Rest confidently in the knowledge that God knows the end of your story from the beginning and will see it through to completion.

2. Seek counsel from adoptive families.

Keep in mind no adoption process is flawless. Ask specific questions.

What were the benefits and challenges of working with your agency?
How did you choose the country?
Why did you choose your agency?
How long did it take?
Was the staff responsive to e-mail and phone calls?
What were the fees?
Would you choose your agency again?
What do you wish you had known from the beginning?

3.  Contact Loving Shepherd Ministries.

Complete their adoption assessment. Of the approximately 50 countries open to adoption, each one has its own set of requirements and restrictions. LSM’s assessment form enables families to determine which countries and programs are options based on each individual family. LSM provides information and assistance on international, infant domestic adoption, foster care, and special needs (waiting children) programs.

4. Contact multiple agencies and request information.

Most adoption agencies offer informational packets. Do your research and consider factors like fees, requirements, licensure, and timeline. Ask about available grants.
