A Word to Waiting Families | Family Friday

We have had adoption in our DNA since before we met or married. As singles, Peter and I had the desire in our hearts to, yes, have biological children if the Lord provided in that way, but also to grow our future family through adoption! And when we met and married this was a major confirmation that we were made to find each other! Our biological children, Lily and Liam, have grown up from their earliest memories hearing mom and dad talking about how we would one day add a brother or sister to our family that didn’t come from mom and dad but from somewhere far away. To see this become a reality through God’s grace and sovereignty and care is one of the wildest most incredible answers to prayer we’ve ever received. While adopting isn’t easy, and requires more time and money and headspace than you think you … Continue reading

Adoption: One Man’s Extraordinary Effort

All believers are called to care for the fatherless. Most of us would readily agree, but so often it’s hard to know what to do or how we can meet the needs of these precious children. One man from West Virginia took this truth to heart and found a creative way to use a lifelong dream for an eternal purpose. On February 29, 2016, Terry began a 6-month adventure to hike the Appalachian Trail–a 5-million-step journey from Georgia to Maine. As is customary for hikers, he took a nickname–“Homeward”–for two reasons. One, he knew he would miss home and work tirelessly with every step to return to it. Second, he wanted to draw attention to adoption and every child’s need for a place to call home. “Homeward” has met new friends (one of whom is actually named Homeward!), enjoyed God’s incredible creation, and learned new truths over the past 4 months. He has chronicled his journey consistently on … Continue reading

How to Raise $11,000 | Family Friday

Finances and paperwork are two of the greatest hurdles for adopting families. Brian and Rebecca found this to be true. In their words … We were towards the end of our adoption journey when a friend, who was also a pastor of a church, told us about their Lifesong matching grant money. At the time, we were overwhelmed at the thought of having to fill out more paperwork, but at our friend’s insistence, we went ahead and did it. We were able to get processed quickly, which was a huge blessing! Over all, we raised $11,000 through the Lifesong mySTORY Crowdfunding website, including the matching grant money we received. It got us to exactly what we needed to finish our Chinese adoption. What a blessing! Lifesong was the conduit for being able to raise the rest of what we needed for our adoption. We had a place people could go and directly give knowing … Continue reading

The Last 2 Seats | Family Friday

family friday

When we started the adoption process we really had no idea where all the money was coming from. It was one of my personal reasons for not considering it for a long time. The cost was nearly an entire year’s worth of salary. We are on the low income end of the wage spectrum, actually, but we have always been blessed with plenty. Plenty of food on the table, plenty of time to love each other. The Lord has blessed us abundantly, and when Paul and I felt drawn to adopt, we knew we already had His blessing in the area of finances too. In every step along the way, He has proven Himself faithful to provide all we need financially, emotionally, and physically. We brought four-year-old Asher home in April of 2015, nearly a year ago. It has been an incredible year. This little boy is so full of … Continue reading

It’s Time to Celebrate!

Outside the Walls has met a new milestone! As many as 153 million orphans world-wide are trapped in a cycle of hopelessness. Adoptive families all over the world wish to bring fatherless children into their family, however, finances often pose great obstacles or even cause good families to walk away from pursuing children in need. Unfortunately, churches don’t always have the funds necessary to help adopting families in their church. The needs are great and the resources are limited. Out of this need, Outside the Walls, a ministry of Lifesong’s church fund partners was born. The goal? —Reach more children together than each church is able to do alone.  Rich Metcalfe, Program Director at Lifesong, oversees church and fund partner relationships– Over the past 5 years we have seen our church and adoption fund partners grow in their willingness to reach out to give financial assistance to families from Outside the Walls of their … Continue reading

$10,000 in Pocket Change | Family Friday

12 M photo 8

For many years, my wife and I have been talking about adopting a little girl from China. God finally put it on our hearts to begin the process in 2013 and we started to research the details of the adoption process. With an estimated total of $35-40,000 in expenses, we were blessed to discover that organizations like Lifesong exist to help families with fundraising. We were able to receive grants through other organizations and fund a lot of the adoption with personal savings. But two months before we were to bring our daughter home, we still had $10,000 left in expenses. Through Lifesong, our friends and family were able to contribute to our adoption and help us raise the last $10,000 we needed! Our friends and family were happy to play a part in bringing our daughter home. We are so thankful we were able to raise funds through Lifesong, … Continue reading

5 Times Chosen | Family Friday

Because of Lifesong’s generous grant contribution and the Lord’s indescribable loving kindness, our family’s adoption journey has been made complete with the recent addition of our son, Matthias! Since applying for your grant, we had several potential placements fall through, causing us to dig even deeper into the faith we proclaim in the God who promises so much to His adopted children. When Matthias’ Birth Mother chose us (she was the 5th to do so!), we were holding hope very loosely, and yet, as we’ve come to say, “Hope Always Rises.”  As we look back at the past 3 weeks since hearing about his coming birth, then traveling, bringing him home, and truly over the past few years of pursuing adoption, we feel acutely familiar with the way the apostle John described the work of Jesus: “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I … Continue reading
