A Letter From Your Foster Child

Thanks to Serena Hanson, alumni of the foster care system in Kansas, for allowing us to share her heart and insight through this letter from your foster child… Dear Foster Parent, I am the child in your home. I am the child who says and does things that melt your heart in one moment, but, I am also the child who amazes you with the ways I “act out” in the very next moment.   I am the kid who arrived at your door with only the emotional baggage I carry on the inside and the trash bag, in my hand, holding a few key items. I am the teenager who makes decisions you don’t understand, says things that hurt, and has an attitude beyond measure.  I am the young person you drive all over to take me to my countless appointments that fill your calendar each week. I am the … Continue reading

When Infertility and Adoption Collide

NAM 3

Welcome to week three of our celebration of National Adoption Month! We hope you’ve been reading along this month as REAL moms unpack the REAL issues of adoption. (Need to catch up? Read past blog posts>>) Join us this week as guest blogger & adoptive mom, Rebecca Marquart, shares her family’s journey of adoption and infertility… There were so many things my husband and I didn’t know before we decided to grow our family. We didn’t know how incredibly hilarious preschoolers are. We didn’t know that although a child may be potty “trained,” they might choose not to exercise that skill. We didn’t know how innocently a child can love and how quick they are to forgive. We also didn’t know how intensely angry and out-of-control that same child could be! We didn’t know about the Wild Kratts or Angelina Ballerina. We had no idea about car seat laws. We … Continue reading

Foster Family’s Home Transformed {Project Renovate}

c0941c25-6a3b-43e4-97c9-e0cb395f7541

The Forgotten Initiative’s second Project Renovate of the summer was a great success! Watch the transformation below! In ONE day, over 40 volunteers came together and put up a new fence and roof, laid flooring, painted walls, cleaned, redecorated, prepped a bathroom for new plumbing, planted flowers….and gave foster mom, Laurie a fresh start! Laurie has been foster mom to her 7 year old grandson for over a year. She was committed to supporting him in every way she could but her home was falling apart around her. A chronic leaking roof made it impossible to have flooring in her living room and the consistent moister from the roof was causing the panelling to literally hang off the walls. There were several other projects she had been unable to get to – though she was deeply motivated and had tried a number of options. Her caseworker nominated her for a … Continue reading

ONE Day. Voice. Purpose. {Orphan Sunday}

OS-Homepage

SAVE THE DATE:  Put November 2, 2014 on your church calendar TODAY! On Orphan Sunday, Christians stand for the orphan. We are a people called to defend the fatherless…to care for the child that has no family…to visit orphans in their distress. Each event is locally-led. Sermons and small groups, concerts and prayer gatherings, shared meals and youth activities—each rousing believers with God’s call to care for the orphan, and what we can do in response. From many sources, one voice. Each November, thousands of events will echo across America and around the globe, all sharing a single goal: that God’s great love for the orphan will find echo in our lives as well. Orphan Sunday is your opportunity to rouse church, community and friends to God’s call to care for the orphan. (from OrphanSunday.org website) It’s never too early to start planning your event! Visit OrphanSunday.org for Parntership Packages, … Continue reading
