One Thought that Gripped Our Hearts | Family Friday

Family Friday

When we began the process to adopt, we were overwhelmed at the thought of the cost (to say the least!) … A good friend of ours, who is also an adoptive father, said that when he was adopting he had this thought: “I have a daughter in China and I MUST get her no matter what. If someone kidnapped any of my children and demanded a huge ransom, I would sell everything and do whatever it took to ransom their freedom. Be prepared for this mindset to grip you.” That thought alone gripped our hearts the moment we heard it. We stepped forward with trepidation, prayerfully asking God to provide and affirm our choice to adopt. And wow was He more than faithful! When we did our Both Hands project, it was the most amazing experience to see so many of our friends and family come alongside us in support. … Continue reading

From Our Family to Yours: A Word to the Undecided

ggmsbaps6k0-i-m-priscilla

In Chad and Kelly’s words– God had a plan for our sweet son all along. We began communicating with our birth mom in August and were able to be with her in the hospital for the birth. We’ve continued communication through a dedicated Facebook page for our son. She enjoys the updates and pictures, and it gives her reassurance that he is in a loving and happy home. I was so apprehensive when we started this journey about having any contact with the birth mom (or dad or both). I’m so glad God changed our hearts. We have so much information to share with Bohdi as he grows, and he will be able to feel a sense of belonging not only to us but to his birth parents. They love him and wanted the best for him, and I’m so thankful we had the time we did to communicate and share with … Continue reading

As God First Loved Us … An Adoption Story from Ukraine

Vlada with her husband, Kolya, and their little girl.

When likeminded believers around the world strive to reach a common goal, extraordinary things happen. Many of us want to reach orphans around the world with the love of Christ. Yet, not being called to adopt or not having several thousand dollars to do so prevents us from reaching fatherless children in other countries in a meaningful way. Thankfully, these are not our only two options. While international adoptions for Americans cost, on average, $40,000, an indigenous adoption for a Ukrainian family costs a small fraction of that. It would make sense–for this reason and others–to equip Christian families in Ukraine who are able and willing to bring Ukrainian orphans into their families as sons and daughters. Years ago–because of the faithful prayer and creative thinking from people like you–Lifesong was able to develop an indigenous adoption program called Adoption Without Borders (AwoB). Adoption Without Borders is an intentional program linking like-minded families and churches in the USA with Christian families in Ukraine who … Continue reading

How to Adopt Without Debt

adopt without debt

Let’s preface this post by stating the obvious: Adoption can be expensive with no easy way to pay for it (unless you own the Isle of Maldives). That said, it is possible for the average American family to afford an adoption, and–with a significant amount of determination, prayer, and elbow grease–to pay for it without accumulating debilitating debt. Let’s look at a potential road map to debt-free adoption. 1. Make the need known. Most of us have been hardwired not to ask for money. In fact, we’ve been taught not to trust people who do. So when it comes to adoption, we feel hesitant to ask for help. Yet we may be underestimating what our friends and family want to do to make our adoption a reality. Consider writing a letter to those you know and love. Briefly share God’s heart for the orphan, His call to the church, your call to adopt, the details of your adoption … Continue reading

Redefining Retirement: God’s Adoption Plan for Our Family

family friday

We were overjoyed here at Lifesong to receive this letter from an adoptive family who brought their child home in November– Dear Lifesong family, Roy and I would like to personally thank you from the bottom of our hearts for awarding our family a matching grant for our daughter Rebekah’s adoption from Chongqing, China. As first-time adoptive parents, our calling came at the ages of 52 and 48, a season when many Americans dream of their upcoming retirement. In obedience to the call, we moved forward, despite little financial reserves and several set-backs. God did not call us to build up barns and store up earthly treasures for leisure, but to pour out our lives for Him bringing the Gospel to the least of these. In our case, God called us to bring the Gospel to a little 21-month-old girl with a significant hearing impairment in an orphanage over 7,000 … Continue reading

How to Bring a Church Family Together (hint: adopt)

updatedphoto

I (Ken) am a pastor and have seen so many amazing things the Lord has done in the lives of others. In all my years of following Jesus and bringing others to a relationship with Him, my wife Sarah and I have never seen so much joy from others to support us with prayers, gifts, help, and love. People in our lives were so full of joy and excitement to see an orphan be brought to a loving family. We also saw their hearts transformed by the reality of the orphan crisis that many did not even know existed. Our adoption of Everly created awareness of this reality and also provided a happy ending to the story. Now she is home. God called us to bring her home. When God uses God’s people and God’s people are willing to listen to the call God puts into our hearts, amazing things can … Continue reading

A Letter to YOU from an Adoptive Family

croppedt2

It didn’t take us long to realize this letter was actually written to you. With all our hearts to the Lifesong family– We brought our sweet boy home forever last December and arrived in Texas on Christmas Eve, after praying for a solid year that he would be home in time for Christmas 2015. What a journey it has been over the last 9 months! As with all adoptions, there are many things families cannot predict, and our story is no different. We had prepared, read, attended conferences and spent time with adoptive families discussing attachment and bonding, anticipating this to be the most challenging aspect to our adoption journey. Although there was a definite and deep grieving period for Titus after leaving the foster parents that had cared for him from the time he was 8 months old until we took custody at 3 years, his bonding to our family has been amazingly smooth … Continue reading
