An Antidote for Holiday Consumerism

tree

The holiday season is lurking around the corner, and with it, distraction is ready to knock on the door of each of our homes via toy catalogues and Christmas lists. As a parent–if you are anything like me–you are constantly looking for ways to celebrate Christ at home during the holiday season. Oh sure, I’ll put a nativity scene in our living room, and my husband will discuss Luke 2 with our kids during family worship. We’ll sing hymns together and remind each other (more often than we can count) that Jesus is the reason for the season. But is that enough? Between all the program practices and Christmas celebrations, is it possible for us to be too distracted by Christmas that we don’t have time to honor Christ? Furthermore, how do we battle the materialism and the idolatry that threaten to claim the entire month of December? One tool … Continue reading

IMPACT of the Advent for Orphans

IMG_3122

I’m sure many of you remember seeing last year’s Advent for Orphans, created by two high school girls with a new twist. Instead of eating a candy or doing a good deed, each day money would be put in a jar that was related to the number of household items you had. For example, give $1.00 for every toilet in your home. Along with this were two bible verses, one about the orphan and one about our Savior as we expectantly waited for Christmas! Thanks to the many of you who participated! We pray that it was a neat experience for your family as you prepared for Christmas and honored the orphan. We are delighted to share just a part of the IMPACT this years Advent for Orphans calendar had on Blake & Christine’s family. Listen in… Upon collecting our money in an old Mason jar, my son Ale(xander) and … Continue reading
