Big Reasons to Celebrate in Ethiopia!

Ethiopia-header

Lifesong School in Ethiopia recently ended for the summer, and that means one thing: Celebration! First, the annual preschool/kindergarten graduation ceremony brimmed with hope as a new class accepted their diplomas. These students represent the future of Ethiopia as well as Lifesong School. We rejoice to see what each child’s future holds.  Second, in addition to the annual kindergarten/preschool graduation ceremony, students in every grade celebrated the end to another excellent year. The kids did very well on their exams–receiving some of the highest scores in the city as compared to fellow schools. These students are dedicated, and they have taken a deep interest in their studies.    A final reason to celebrate! We are grateful to faithful sponsors whose monthly support provides the students with two daily meals and a quality education. For many students, this sponsorship is the difference between a bright future or no future at all. Good news: ALL of the students … Continue reading

The Gobena Story | Mission Moment

The-Gobena-Story

What skill or ability can YOU use to make a difference in the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children? Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, a business owner, or a pastor (or anything in between!) you have been uniquely gifted by God to serve the fatherless and vulnerable in some way. How can we be certain of this? James 1:27 tells us that religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father includes visiting orphans. And Scripture will never tell us to do something without equipping us to obey. What unique gift can YOU use to make a difference in the lives of children in need?   Meet Gobena and Mulunesh When 70-year-old Gobena and his wife, Mulunesh, found an abandoned infant under a false banana tree in Ethiopia, the couple knew they had to help. “Because she is God’s soul,” Gobena would later explain. Carefully, they took the baby back to their home and … Continue reading

Your Invitation to a Graduation | Ethiopia

8074129774_40b699c8e1_o

Lifesong schools exist to prepare students–mentally and spiritually–to launch into the world. So it would seem appropriate at the end of a school year to reflect on the goodness of God. At the end of the school year, each of the three Lifesong school campuses in Ethiopia has its own program, where the parents are invited, skits are performed, poems and essays are read, speeches are given, and the families hear a report on the school year that has just concluded. Awards are then given to the top students, the best clubs, the winning sports teams, and the honored staff members. And finally, the students go to their classrooms to receive their report cards. According to Gary, Misgana Ministies & Lifesong Ethiopia Director– It’s a really big deal here in rural Ethiopia and we are happy to welcome large crowds! The staff and parents always appreciate the festivities. At the Ziway Primary school one of the boys, Million, received the award … Continue reading

Church Under the Acacia Tree | Ethiopia Update

school

Enjoy this update from Ethiopia directors, Gary and Peggy Ifft, with Misgana Ministries— Greetings from very hot Ziway. This time of the year is usually warmer, but nothing like what it is this year. The officials are blaming it on El Niño. The high temperatures each day range from 90 to 104 degrees F (32 to 40 Celsius). This area seems to be turning back into the desert they say it once was.   A few weeks ago one of our teachers sent me a text message asking if we could help the small church he had founded outside the town of Adami Tulu where we have one of our large school campuses. Since we receive requests for help in some way or other every day, I was inclined to simply delete the message and move on. However, something stopped me from doing so. I asked the school director to have him … Continue reading

The Day Obama Showed Up for School

Ethiopia Obama

Praising God for this update from our friends in Ethiopia … Registration day, which was held August 17 at the Nursery school, has evolved from utter to controlled chaos. The lines of families hoping to enroll their young child into one of the 70 spots available begin in the pre-dawn hours.  Over the years, registering new students has developed into such a repetitive process that if we’re not careful we can make judgements about the next person in line without even really looking at the face of the Ethiopian standing in front of us.  But we always remind ourselves that each child is unique, designed and created by God.  When he heard an elderly woman state her boy’s name as Obama, Gary looked up into the tired grandmother’s face and realized this was an opportunity to see the fruit of our labors from several years before. It really wasn’t that … Continue reading

Advocates Provide New Science Labs in Ethiopia

IMG_3975

Enjoy this update from Ethiopia Advocate, Shonda Dietz, as she reflects on a recent trip to Ethiopia with her family…   “My family recently had the privilege of spending the week at the Lifesong for Orphans’ schools in Ethiopia. We have five children (ages 5, 6, 8, 9 and 12). Our youngest and middle sons were adopted from Ethiopia so it was a joy to take them back to visit their family and homeland. Leading up to our trip, Gary put a bug in my ear that the administrators and teachers in Ziway would love to have a hands-on science lab (a novelty in most Ethiopian schools). Solomon (the director of the three schools) talked about how growing up he always had a keen interest in science. However, they never had access to anything hands-on, learning only theory from textbooks. He desired our students to have this opportunity.  Being a … Continue reading

From Adoption to Advocacy {Family Friday}

FF 08-29-14

We are so thankful for the role Lifesong played in the adoption of our daughter.  They created a place for our family and friends to come alongside us and support us financially as we went through the adoption process.  This helped eased the financial burden that comes with adoption. While we were in Ethiopia visiting our daughter and going to court to adopt her, we travelled to Ziway to visit the Lifesong schools and see the work that they are doing there.  It impacted us in a huge way!  We saw first-hand how we could financially support the schools and how they bring opportunity to this region in Ethiopia. We also saw how their child sponsorship program is easing the financial burden for families in Ziway and allowing families to stay together.  God used our daughter’s adoption to put a passion in us to advocate for the Lifesong schools and … Continue reading
