How Your School Can Reach Orphaned & Vulnerable Children

how-your-school

School is a good place to learn life-changing principles and ideas. So why not use the school year to educate students on the needs of peers around the world–specifically orphaned and vulnerable children? With a little time and effort, schools can make a tremendous impact on the lives of children in need. Here are some ideas to encourage students to learn and care about the world’s orphans. Don’t be intimidated by the size or scope of the need. Focus on one thing you can do to help one child, one orphanage, or one school. God has an incredible track record of multiplying human effort to accomplish His big, eternal purposes. (Look for a great example of this at the end of the post!) As a school or even as a class, you can: Adopt a school overseas. Support the education, discipleship, and nutrition for children in need at a school overseas. (Learn more here.) Adopt an orphanage overseas. Partner with an … Continue reading

See What God Is Doing for Our Students in Liberia!

Countries- map

God has been doing big things for students and families in Liberia! The end of the academic year signals a break in classes and homework, and–for many of our kids–a milestone reached.  Last month, Lifesong Liberia had more graduates than ever from kindergarten, sixth, and ninth grades, and our second high school graduate. We are excited by this growth and are so proud of these students. They have worked hard, and we are thankful they have the opportunity to attend school! In Liberia, receiving an education is a privilege, especially for girls. Statistically, only 4 out of every 10 Liberian girls attend school, and the rate declines sharply in the upper levels.  . The children and young adults who live at our homes are growing in their passion for education and learning. As they mature, they can articulate their hopes and dreams for the future. It is wonderful to be able to help our kids set goals … Continue reading

Big Reasons to Celebrate in Ethiopia!

Ethiopia-header

Lifesong School in Ethiopia recently ended for the summer, and that means one thing: Celebration! First, the annual preschool/kindergarten graduation ceremony brimmed with hope as a new class accepted their diplomas. These students represent the future of Ethiopia as well as Lifesong School. We rejoice to see what each child’s future holds.  Second, in addition to the annual kindergarten/preschool graduation ceremony, students in every grade celebrated the end to another excellent year. The kids did very well on their exams–receiving some of the highest scores in the city as compared to fellow schools. These students are dedicated, and they have taken a deep interest in their studies.    A final reason to celebrate! We are grateful to faithful sponsors whose monthly support provides the students with two daily meals and a quality education. For many students, this sponsorship is the difference between a bright future or no future at all. Good news: ALL of the students … Continue reading

Meet Charity: Future World Changer

friends

Charity could never have guessed all that God had planned for her life when she first began attending Lifesong School in Garneton, Zambia. Though she was just a little girl in primary school, she was already well-acquainted with heartache and struggle. Her dad lost his job, for instance, and he could no longer provide for the family. Additionally, she had to move out of her parents’ home and live with her sister who was already a busy wife and mom. Despite the best efforts of a family who loved each other, life wasn’t easy and daily needs went unmet. Charity heard about a school in Garneton with a reputation for offering a good education and she wanted to attend. She hoped Lifesong School might be the ticket she needed to pursue a brighter future. So she applied, was accepted, and willingly walked the hour and a half each way to attend classes. When she arrived–without shoes, books, or … Continue reading

Who Is the Orphan in America?

orphan-in-america

When you hear “orphan in America,” who comes to mind? The truth may surprise you. Since the United States lacks traditional orphanages it can be easy to believe that our country is void of orphaned children (whether literal or social). Yet, in reality, the need to love and care for vulnerable children in our country is vast and growing greater all the time. Since many–if not most–of today’s orphans in the U.S. can be found in foster care, here are 3 facts to consider about children in the system: 1. 428,000 children are in foster care in the U.S. Consider this: The 4 largest football stadiums in the United States could be filled to capacity and still not hold all the children who are currently in the system. FYI: Roughly 102,000 of these children are currently eligible for adoption. 2. 8 is the average age of a child in foster care in the U.S. According to milestones established by professionals, … Continue reading

Why Dads Are Vitally Important to Orphan Care

why-dads-are-improtant

It’s no secret that the orphan care space is dominated by women. God has created women to be nurturers, and many are doing good work nurturing vulnerable children. But God has called men to a specific task as well–to protect and provide for our families and to help father the fatherless children in our midst. In May, a group of dads gathered at CAFO2017 to discuss their role. Specifically, they answered the who, what, how, and why of men in orphan care. Here are some highlights– The Who “Why are men important in orphan care? You’re the spiritual leader of your home, and this is a spiritual crisis. 340,000 children in foster care is a crisis of epic proportions.” –Scott Lundy, Arrow Child & Family Ministries The What “I had a watershed moment where God dealt with me, saying, ‘J.T. what’s important in life? What’s not going to rust? What’s not going to burn up? And what’s not going to blow away?’ –the life … Continue reading

How a Farm Turned an Orphan Into a Leader: Meet Kolya

Kol

Kolya knows the powerful impact of being loved while living in an orphanage. And because of it, the future just got brighter for kids in Ukraine. Meet Kolya. He was just 13 years old when he entered the Constant Christian Presence (CCP) program at Loubetin. Looking for acceptance,  Kolya connected with friends who had a reputation for being wild. But what Kolya didn’t know was that God had plans for his life. As Kolya grew, he spent time with volunteers at CCP–listening to them talk about God and the Gospel. They offered him the acceptance he craved, and when it was time for him to age out of the orphanage, he moved into the Lifesong Ukraine transitional program where he was mentored by loving house parents in a Christian home.     “The chance to live in a transitional home gave me strong motivation to change my life for better. I wanted to use this opportunity wisely.” –Kolya He did use the opportunity wisely. He received his college degree to become an … Continue reading
