Your Invitation to Prevent Orphans | Ann Voskamp

sweet

On May 6, 2015, I called an adoption agency for the very first time. Somehow my family and I believed that true religion is about caring for the widow and the orphan, and we wanted to break out of whatever box we were in. And somehow we wanted to be about the upside down kingdom come. Our little one has been home from China with us since April 22nd of this year. She was found at less than 4 pounds Found in the long grass beside a river flowing south. Found at maybe 4 days old. In April, I stood in China at that grass finding place, sat at the police station where she was brought when she was found, stood in the orphanage where she slept with 800 other abandoned children. And I ached for coming late. I have traveled the world over with Compassion International and have seen the most … Continue reading

Look what incredible skill the boys are learning in Liberia!

Countries- map

The sounds of hammering, sawing, and sanding are in the air … For the past three months, seven of our oldest boys have been very busy on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons.  They are hard at work, first listening and watching, then doing it themselves. Under the guidance of experienced woodworkers, they are being taught basic woodworking skills, with a focus on making furniture. They are learning to produce and repair chairs, tables, beds, and cupboards. They also practice spraying and painting certain pieces, and have learned how to install doors, among other skills. This practical, hands-on vocational program will run for six months, with another group of students joining in by the end of November. As each student completes the training with accuracy, he will “graduate” and receive his own tool set. We are hopeful that some of the participants will go on to a successful career in carpentry, furniture design, or a … Continue reading

How to Spare a Girl from Prostitution | Ukraine Update

veronica3

Greetings from Team Ukraine! Six years ago our transitional program began in Zap out of a rental house. Today–now that we have a great property with a transitional home, a pavilion, and a small family house–we can say that in due course, God has more than met our expectations for them. All of these buildings exist for the glory of God. The transitional house is filled with children who are mentored by a great and loving family. Each weekend, they invite kids from the orphanage to visit church with them and spend time with God as a family. They view the kids in the orphanage as future graduates and champions for Christ! Meet Veronica 19-year-old Veronica is our sister in Christ and a great volunteer at Lifesong Ukraine. Here is her story in her own words: My name is Veronica. I was born in Zap city in a broken family. When I was 4, … Continue reading

Orphan Sunday: 5 Ways You Can Make a Difference

Orphan Sunday Nov 13

November 13, 2016. Christians around the world will observe Orphan Sunday and will stand in solidarity for the vulnerable. Many churches will highlight James 1:27 and renew their commitment to visit orphans in their affliction. Whether you are a church member or a member of church staff, you have an opportunity to join believers in standing for the orphan on this important day. Here are 5 ways you can get involved: 1. PRAY. Ask God to direct your church leadership as they decide how to care for vulnerable children and families. Pray for Christians to reflect God’s love at home and abroad. Pray for the needs of the fatherless. 2. PLAN. November will be here before we know it. We’ve got resources to help you communicate with church leadership, and we can wholehearted recommend the tools offered by Christian Alliance for Orphans as well. Regardless of what you choose to do, start planning now so November … Continue reading

Family Found! | Guatemala

whole family

Some days the work we do is heartbreaking. Other days we literally weep with joy. Recently our Village of Hope Guatemala team was able to sit with one of our 18-year-olds who has spent her entire life in an orphanage (she joined us at at age 15) and tell her that we found her family. Her paperwork stated that her mother–who was 14 when she gave birth–was now deceased and that there was no other family … and yet our social worker, Rosalinda, worked many extra hours never giving up, going above and beyond, and continued to search–finally locating an aunt and a grandmother last week. She did a home visit and they are a precious family who had also been looking for our 18-year-old throughout the years. Her grandfather was also committed to finding her, but unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago. Searches take money and they didn’t always … Continue reading

Water Is Life | Liberia Update

Countries- map

A New Venture for Lifesong Liberia. Lifesong Liberia has started a new business! A new venture named Lifesong Water was recently launched in Monrovia, where there is great need for purified drinking water. Lifesong Water is helping meet that need, while providing production and marketing training for some of our kids. As this project grows, it will become a sustainable business for us. We are hopeful that this business will continue to grow and will lead to more sustainability for Lifesong Liberia in the future. Water from city wells is purified and then packaged into small plastic bags. The bags are further packaged into larger sacks, which are sold to schools, churches and other businesses. Several of our students are involved in production three days each week and others are learning accounting practices, as they track sales and inventory. This project has already shown a profit, and is particularly valuable during the … Continue reading

Moving Day! | Bolivia Update

Countries- map

It was moving day in Bolivia. Both the Boys’ and the Girls’ homes moved into new houses this month. There was an amazing property that became available for the boys, who have been looking for more space for a year, and the homeowner also had a family member with a nice house available for the girls. These opportunities were too good to pass up. Since Bolivia is on winter break right now, it was a perfect time for both homes to pack up and move. It was an “all hands on deck” endeavor as all the staff, boys, and teams of volunteers joined in to help. Both houses required 3 huge truckloads to move to their new spaces. Loading, unloading, and putting things in their place took all day. The relationships formed in a few short days were very profound for all parties involved, and one of the volunteer families have … Continue reading
