Wanted: More People to Help Kids Like Davison

IMG_0458

For children sponsored in Zambia, attending school is a privilege, not a burden. In poverty-stricken communities like Kitwe, children are often left to fend for themselves while parents desperately search for ways to feed and care for the family. Without proper motivation, many children end up dropping out of school, leaving little to no hope of breaking the poverty cycle. “The compound”–as it is called by people in the community–can be a place of violence, crime, or abuse, certainly not a good environment for students to thrive in their education or grow in their relationship with Christ. With your help, Lifesong Zambia established a school almost a decade ago for the purpose of providing over 300 orphaned and vulnerable children with a quality Christian education. Additionally–through the vision and funding of people like you–Student Life Homes were constructed to serve as a safe haven for older students who lived in the compound. For many kids, sponsorship to Lifesong School is … Continue reading

The Gift of Monday Mornings | Liberia Update

IMG_4733

Tests. Homework. Projects. Many students around the U.S. do not consider Mondays–and specifically going back to school–to be a gift. Far from it. Not so in Liberia. Many, many children are unable to attend school on a regular basis. And for them, it can be the difference between a future filled or desolate of hope and opportunity. Lifesong Liberia is thankful for the incredible privilege of having schools on site at both of our homes where 200+ children–including the children in our care along with kids from the community–are invited to receive a good education from dedicated teachers. We are honored to work with Liberian nationals who are passionate about rescuing and caring for destitute and abandoned children. Meet two such staff members who serve as educators and role models at Lifesong School in Liberia. We are grateful for these two (and many others!) who faithfully love and serve the children, all for the glory of God. Meet … Continue reading

Today Is a Big Day in Zambia!

Zambia Students

Nervous energy and new uniforms signal a very important event: 400 students at Lifesong Zambia go back to school today. We are excited about this year for several reasons. First, the new uniforms are sky blue instead of green. Second, this year marks our first year having a Grade 12 class graduating! Finally, this year marks 10 years Lifesong School has been here in Zambia. 10 years! God’s continued goodness is truly astounding. Our hope for this year is that we continue living out our mission of bringing joy and purpose to orphans and vulnerable children by discipling future leaders of Zambia through Biblical truth and educational excellence. — Skip Stallings, Lifesong Zambia staff Another example of God’s kindness?–This past year, every single one of the Grade 7 students passed their exams! This is the direct result of disciplined study, dedicated teaching, and the daily prayers of people around the world. The students … Continue reading

Build a School, Build a Life | Zambia Update

Screen Shot 2016-02-22 at 1.39.47 PM

Enjoy this update from our Zambia team– For some time, God has been laying it on our hearts to help prepare graduates and students in need of vocational training for future work. Through a series of events, the job of creating a building to house a vocational school has begun. We anticipate sharing more news about this development as it continues to unfold. For now, the building phase is progressing nicely. Recently, we had a team from Central Illinois spend a week giving us a huge head start on the construction. Our goal is to have the school built and ready for students in 2017-2018.  Many of the boys who are currently in school are making big plans for the future. We believe God, too, has plans for their lives and we want to support them in pursuing the best possible opportunities for growth and employment.  Fordson (pictured right) is in … Continue reading

Small Seeds and Green Roofs {Zambia Update}

house

Please enjoy this update from our team in Zambia … “Boss, can I have this piece of plastic?”  “Sir, are you going to use that cardboard box?”   I can tell rainy season is right around the corner.  Every year, the ladies on the farm start patching up their roofs for rainy season.  And every year, I give them what the farm can spare so they can stay dry. In the 4-5 months of rainy season, our area of Zambia will get OVER 3 FEET of rain. We need it to get through the other months of hot, dry weather.  But, it presents some pretty big challenges for our workers. In addition to the natural  increase in malaria in rainy season, they deal with wet houses. Their roofs are a collection of tin sheets, asbestos tiles, cardboard, plastic, feed bags, or whatever might shed water. Often, the kids go to bed wet and cold. This year, … Continue reading

The Day Obama Showed Up for School

Ethiopia Obama

Praising God for this update from our friends in Ethiopia … Registration day, which was held August 17 at the Nursery school, has evolved from utter to controlled chaos. The lines of families hoping to enroll their young child into one of the 70 spots available begin in the pre-dawn hours.  Over the years, registering new students has developed into such a repetitive process that if we’re not careful we can make judgements about the next person in line without even really looking at the face of the Ethiopian standing in front of us.  But we always remind ourselves that each child is unique, designed and created by God.  When he heard an elderly woman state her boy’s name as Obama, Gary looked up into the tired grandmother’s face and realized this was an opportunity to see the fruit of our labors from several years before. It really wasn’t that … Continue reading

Riches Found on a Construction Site!

worship service

Please enjoy this update from our friends at Construction of Hope: Man’ and ‘Nuen’ are 2 Cambodian teens who were brought to live with their parents on a construction site in Thailand. About a year ago, Man was one of a few children from the construction site who used to come to an English program we held at a local Thai church in the area on Saturdays. While we were taking Man back to the construction site after class one day, Man asked us if he could have some books. We asked him what kind of books, and he replied that any kind of book would do, because he just wanted to learn more.  After discussing possibilities with the Thai church, the pastor offered to hold Thai language classes at the church on Monday afternoons. Man and 3 other children started coming to the church to learn Thai, and, due to the students’ eagerness … Continue reading
