Announcing a New Baby! | Guatemala Update

Guatemala

Our team is thrilled to announce the arrival of our newest family member. Joining us at just 5 lbs. 4 oz., this tiny blessing was born a month early. She and her mother are doing well, and we are so proud of them both. Theirs is a story of deep grief and resilient hope. We have come to understand that through tragedy the Lord brings hope, and this baby is proof of that! Every life has purpose, and every life can change the world. This mother and daughter are no exception. Through healing and hope, by God’s grace, they will point others to Jesus and to His faithfulness for many years to come. Isabel’s story Tossed from family member to family member, young Isabel looked for a place to belong. When her uncle agreed to take her in, Isabel hoped this was finally that place. Soon after she arrived, however, it became clear this would … Continue reading

The Secret to the Great Escape from Poverty | Guatemala Update

Guatemala

Projects that give life and dignity and replace negative experiences with positive ones–like our recent trip to the beach–are possible because of people like you. One of our teams at Village of Hope sponsored a field trip in February to Montericco Beach, which is about 4 hours away. A Guatemalan Road Trip is much like an American Road Trip! We packed a cooler full of snacks, the kids sang songs and played games, and we even had to take a potty break on the side of the highway for one of the kids. “¿Cuanto tiempo falta?” (How much longer?) was a popular phrase that day. However, there are a few differences: most cars here max out at 40 MPH, we were never more than 5 minutes from hot fresh tortillas, and we had to stop 5 or 6 times on the side of the highway to pour water on the engine of our bus. … Continue reading

Family Found! | Guatemala

whole family

Some days the work we do is heartbreaking. Other days we literally weep with joy. Recently our Village of Hope Guatemala team was able to sit with one of our 18-year-olds who has spent her entire life in an orphanage (she joined us at at age 15) and tell her that we found her family. Her paperwork stated that her mother–who was 14 when she gave birth–was now deceased and that there was no other family … and yet our social worker, Rosalinda, worked many extra hours never giving up, going above and beyond, and continued to search–finally locating an aunt and a grandmother last week. She did a home visit and they are a precious family who had also been looking for our 18-year-old throughout the years. Her grandfather was also committed to finding her, but unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago. Searches take money and they didn’t always … Continue reading

Hope Changes Everything | Guatemala Update

hands

Enjoy this update from our Guatemala team– Gabriella was just 4 years old when she remembers learning that her father was sick. “Well,” she thought, “as long as he’s stuck in bed, he won’t be able to hit me.” Gabriella had no idea how this sickness would affect her for the rest of her life. Shortly after her father got sick, her family ran out of money and little Gabriella was sent to the streets to work, selling candies and packs of cigarettes–or sometimes stealing–to survive. It was cold and dark, and she had to run into alleys or hide in gutters to protect herself from abusers, because she couldn’t return until she had enough money. Her father’s condition continued to worsen, and she noticed her mother, too, was looking weak. When Gabriella was 7, her father passed away. Curled up in the fetal position next to the casket, Gabriella … Continue reading

One Question that Changed Her World | Guatemala Update

amy block

Enjoy this update from our Guatemala team– I saw Zuly bend down and quietly whisper in the little girl’s ear. “You are so smart,” she said. The little girl looked up to her and smiled shyly.  At the age of 3 months, Zuly began living in an orphanage. It was all she had ever known. Caregivers had come and gone; friends had, too. Nothing in her life had ever been stable. Some children were adopted, others were sent to different homes. Some were reunified with their biological families. Zuly knew nothing about her past. Sometimes she would allow herself to dream. She would dream that one day her birthmother would walk back through the doors of the orphanage and come for her–that she would pick her up, spin her around, hug her tightly, and tell her that she had missed her every single day of her life. Most days though … Continue reading

Hope Campaign 2015 – FAITH

faith-dance

Please enjoy this update from Village of Hope, Guatemala– She is His promise. A bright little star. I sit and I watch her dance. Twirling around the room. The smile on her face says it all. Her dance is a praise to Him. The One who saved her. The One who gave her hope. I will never forget the day we met. They had called us to ask us about accepting a possible transfer. She had grown up in another Children’s home but was causing them too many problems. Her attitude was bad they said. She wouldn’t listen. It was time for her to go. As I sat at the table next to her and watched the tears stream down her face, God allowed me the privilege of seeing her as He sees her. What she could be- if only she knew. We told her about Village of Hope. She … Continue reading
