I Can’t Ask Friends and Family to Fund Our Adoption. Can I?

Asking for money for any reason is hard. Asking for money to fund an adoption is no easier. But is it wrong? Here are 3 questions to consider– 1. Why are you asking for financial support? Adoption is expensive, but expense–alone–isn’t always enough of a reason to ask other people for help. Many adopting families ask for help because the amount of money required in a short timeline far exceeds their ability to pay. For example, according to Adoptive Families Magazine, the average fees for a domestic adoption in the United States are $39,966. Many adoption agencies require a bulk of that money up front to handle application, homestudy, and agency fees, etc. While coming up with $39,966 over several years may be possible, coming up with it in a matter of months may be another story altogether. If God has clearly led your family to adopt, He may clearly lead you to humble yourself … Continue reading

Why Adoption Funding Matters | Family Friday

Adoption funding matters. For many families, it is the difference between adopting and not being able to adopt a child in need. Here at Lifesong, we believe in adoption funding and are grateful to those of YOU who give to make it possible. But every once in a while we receive a letter from a family that proves the point better than we ever could. Consider this letter from a family who recently brought their son home– Dear Lifesong family, God’s timing is God’s timing, and that has never been more evident to us than in our adoption journey. While usually God’s timing means waiting and faith-testing, God’s timing when it came to Lifesong is definitely an example of Him showing up and being a Heavenly Dad that enjoys spoiling his children. We found out that we had been approved for the blessing of an interest-free loan on 5/19/16. We … Continue reading

The Power of Prayer in Adoption | Family Friday

Our adoption journey is marked by so many accounts that can only be explained by God’s hand working in our adoption. The main detail that is such a huge part of the story God is writing through our son, Steele, is that the same day that we emailed our agency to ask if Steele was available for adoption was the same day that China prepared a file for him to become available for adoption. We learned about Steele through our agency’s website as they had a program to support some orphans in China who were unlikely to be adopted and who came from very hard places. Steele was one of those sweet children, and his picture was on our agency’s website. Later, we built a relationship with a young woman who works for our agency. In talking to her, we learned that she had spent several weeks in China caring … Continue reading

The Bumpy, Dark Road of Adoption | Family Friday

Adoption was in our hearts for a long time. For Georgie the desire has been there since she was a little girl. For Wyley, it came later in our marriage when we were told we wouldn’t be able to have children. The Lord gave us three biological children and called us to the mission field, so our desire to adopt remained there but never seemed to be the “right time.” There were so many reasons that made adoption impossible, barring a miracle. We didn’t make enough money, we were living in very rural areas and were always transitioning … … Until the Lord clearly and graciously told us to adopt as we were on a visa run in Thailand. Our adoption started 2 years ago in what was supposed to be an 8-month process. I wish our testimony was one of extraordinary faith, where we just trusted and steadily … Continue reading

A Remarkable Story | Family Friday

When we began our adoption journey, we never could have anticipated the ways in which God would tell a remarkable story. He did this through His loving kindness, beautiful generosity, caring provision, and faithful care of His people. It took 4.5 years to bring our twin four-year-olds home from Haiti. In that time, He revealed His character in both big and subtle ways. Our wait was filled with many hard moments, times of uncertainty, deep aching in our longing for our children, anxiety about the financial strain … and the list continues. The wait was filled with so many dynamically difficult pieces which we never could have seen entering into the adoption process when we knew excitement and simple hope. We knew the financial component would be a challenge, yet we knew God’s calling was clear and that He would make it happen. We made sacrifices and He laid our adoption … Continue reading

Did God Really Tell You to Adopt? | Family Friday

2 years. So much can happen in that time period, and yet it can also feel excruciatingly, hopelessly slow. 3 fundraisers, dozens of grant applications filed, innumerable nights and days of pleading, agonizing prayers. 2 adoption fall-throughs. These are just a handful of the things we experienced on our journey of domestic adoption. Our family finished our home study and began waiting for that phone call from our agency on June 1, 2015. We were brimming with hope and confident about the calling we had felt from God to pursue domestic adoption. As we began the process of adding to our family, our biggest fear was finances. And so, with our home study complete, I feverishly began filling out grant applications and exploring every possible avenue to save money and raise funds. My husband took a second job, we sold everything we could get our hands on (including many things … Continue reading

5 New Year’s Resolutions to Show Love to the Fatherless

With a new year comes new opportunities to do things we’ve always wanted to do but never done. If you’re in the habit of writing New Year’s Resolutions, consider adding some or all of these to your list. 1. Sponsor a child. Christian-based child sponsorship has incredible potential to change a child’s entire life and eternal future. By sponsoring a child, you have the opportunity to help someone overcome poverty–which in turn can save future generations the heartache of family disruption and other devastating loss. Better still, with Christian programs, children are taught the truth about God and the fact that Jesus loves them. Many monthly sponsorship programs cost the equivalent of one trip out to dinner with the family, yet the long-term benefits are enormous. Learn more. 2. Take a foster care class. For many of us, our hearts have been stirred for the foster care community but we don’t know where to … Continue reading
