Adoption 101: Common Questions When Deciding to Adopt

Choosing to adopt is a major decision that should be accompanied by plenty of prayer and conversation. Here are 5 questions to ask yourself (and/or your spouse) when considering whether or not adoption is right for you. 1. Why do we want to adopt? There are as many poor reasons as there are good reasons to adopt. Start by being honest with yourself about why you want to do it. It has been said that we lose our way when we lose our why–and this can be true on the adoption journey especially. 2. Where can we find good counsel? The Bible makes it clear that in a multitude of counselors there is safety (Proverbs 11). Do you have parents or church leadership from whom you can get good counsel? Who can/will become your network after you begin the process? Who can you count on to pray for you on the journey? 3. Who can we talk to … Continue reading

When Two Becomes Eight Kids (and counting!) | Family Friday

Our plan when I married my wife was to have one or two children. Lifesong recently helped us add our eighth. From the bottom of our hearts, we are so grateful God allowed us to be part of His plan in this way and to be surrounded by our incredible children. It is amazing He was able to pull us through our own selfishness to the life we now live! God has orchestrated every step in our lives to lead to being a large adoptive family that will continue to grow, giving us abilities and circumstances to make it happen. After I unexpectedly lost my father at age 17, my wife’s parents virtually “adopted” me, taking me into their home and spiritual training. This was the first notion of adoption that entered into our lives. Later on, He brought us face-to-face with other adoptive families, catching and holding our attention … Continue reading

How Facebook Led Us to Our Son | Family Friday

It had been nearly a year since we had started our adoption journey when we received a life-changing call from our pastor’s wife. She told us that a friend of hers on Facebook had just posted that she had an emergency. The emergency involved a woman about to give birth who had made an adoption plan, however, the chosen adoptive family had arrived at the hospital and then backed out due to the possibility that the baby about to be born would have special needs. The friend was looking for a Christian, homestudy-ready family to step up and adopt this baby and help this family in crisis. At first we couldn’t believe the request. Was it a scam? Was this situation–a Facebook post–really how our adoption was going to happen? We had prayed at times for God to simply bring a baby to our doorstep as we had not received … Continue reading

Where Life and Death Meet in Grace and Adoption | Family Friday

The adoption of our precious daughter is part of a legacy where God connected the dots of His sovereignty over 2 young lives, down to the smallest details. We started on the path to adopt a child with a limb difference because we had a nephew who was born with orthopedic special needs. He passed away unexpectedly in the middle of our adoption process, but our travel approval arrived on what would have been his third birthday, and we left for China on the first anniversary of his death. Over the years we have had the privilege of supporting a number of friends in their adoption journeys through participating in Lifesong-facilitated financial support programs. When we found ourselves called to adopt, we knew we wanted to partner with Lifesong. We wanted to create a pathway for others to share with us in the joy of extending the gift of family to … Continue reading

Thoughts from a Reluctant Mom | Family Friday

My husband always wanted to adopt, but I was a little more reluctant. I don’t really think of myself as a kid person, and I was worried about loving and bonding with a child that wasn’t biologically mine. Fast-forward 9 years of marriage and 3 biological kids. We were “done,” but God wasn’t done with us. He began leading our hearts toward adoption, which was easy for my husband, Conner, but quite the task for me. I fought it every step of the way but finally could no longer deny the pull toward adopting and completing our family. It took us nearly 9 months from start to finish. In February 2016, our son John was placed into our arms. The process was hard and filled with emotional ups and downs, but it grew me and prepared me for the moment I became Mom to John. God in His kindness and provision prepared the way, … Continue reading

God’s Word is sufficient for every need. 1. Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to Him Who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. The Power of a Church Adoption Fund

Several years ago, Julie James was shaken to her core by the reality that many would-be, should-be adoptive parents are unable to bring children home because of 1 obstacle: finances. In her opinion, finances should never stand in the way of families doing what God has called them to do. After reading a blog post written by a family who desperately wanted to adopt but could not, due to finances, Julie typed four words into an e-mail and sent them to her best friend in the middle of the night. The words: THIS IS NOT OK. And the seed was planted in her heart to do something–to give families she knew and loved a tangible way to bridge the gap of adoption financing and bring their children home. In her words– “My faith in the fact that God does provide was solid. He owns it all. It wasn’t a matter of IF God was … Continue reading
