5 Simple Ways to Become an Adoption-Friendly Church

Many churches claim to be pro-adoption, but they do little to actually support adoption. The good news is, it isn’t hard to become adoption-friendly. Here are 5 ideas to get started: 1. Pray for adopting families and waiting children. If your church prints a regular prayer sheet, consider including the names of families in process. Not only will this keep waiting families in the minds of praying people, but it will encourage the church family to ask for updates. If you do not currently have waiting families in your church, consider sharing adoption-related requests during times of corporate prayer. Furthermore, pray for God to raise up families in your church who are eager to adopt waiting children. 2. Encourage the church body to use their gifts to support adoptive families. Adoptive families need more than finances. Additionally, they need babysitters, encouragement, resources, and prayer. Everyone in the church can provide something to an adoptive family–even if it’s simply … Continue reading

Best Thing About Being a Dad

adoption

Very few life experiences mimic the gospel as closely as adoption. The Andersons know first-hand that, in adoption–as in salvation–God sovereignly interrupts the logical order of things as He lovingly orchestrates a new and chosen path for His child. Adoption is not without its pain, but done correctly, it is not without its blessings. Recent Barna research revealed that 77% of practicing Christians believe God’s people have a personal responsibility to adopt. While this statistic is encouraging, current trends also show a 35-year-low on international adoptions. The insecure national economy plus complicated adoption processes may contribute to this decline. Despite the numbers–and due, in large part, to your faithful and enthusiastic support of the fatherless–Lifesong continues to see churches and families embracing adoption for the good of the vulnerable and the glory of God. Over 5,000 families have received adoption funding support, and since 2011, at least 95 churches have partnered with Lifesong to help … Continue reading

Adoption: Amazing and Messy | Family Friday

Our church, The Church at Brook Hills, has played a huge role in our lives in displaying the biblical truths about adoption and the fatherless, and opening our eyes to the Lord’s command in regards to this. The Lord placed adoption on our hearts throughout our engagement, but after two years of an infertility journey, we felt the Lord strongly leading us to close that door and to begin praying about adding to our family through adoption. We eagerly began the adoption process in the summer of 2010, feeling led to the country of China. Our first precious little girl, Karlye, was placed in our arms in June of 2011. Karlye has been such a blessing to our family and has taught us so much more than we could have ever imagined. She is a beautiful, smart, funny, kind-hearted and determined little girl. She was an amazingly brave little girl … Continue reading

7 Ways Your Church Can Serve the Fatherless

We talk a lot about churches serving the fatherless. Sunday School classes discuss it and entire Orphan Sundays are dedicated to the topic. But orphan care shouldn’t just be a ministry option within the church. It should be a mission of the entire body. What does it look like for the church as a whole to serve the fatherless on a regular basis? Here are 7 ideas: 1. Pray. The significance of depending on God for orphan care is that His love–and not our guilt–becomes our greatest motivation. Here at Lifesong, we are always looking for churches and individuals to join our prayer team. Would you consider praying with us? 2. Give. Did you know that one of the greatest (if not the greatest) barrier to families in your church adopting is money? Whether you can only give a little or your church can give a lot, we’d love to serve you through a no … Continue reading

Carrying on a Legacy {Family Friday}

Our adoption story started a long time ago. When my mother was growing up, my grandparents opened their home to dozens of children in the foster care system. They modeled selfless love by putting feet to the gospel and giving sacrificially of what little they had. My husband Josh and I wanted to carry on their legacy in our own family.  Through their example, God placed the desire in our hearts to adopt.  In 2006 and 2009, God blessed us with our two biological sons, Luke and Colby.  In 2011, we began to feel God directing us to begin our adoption process.  This was a daunting thought for us because we didn’t know where to start or how to finance it.  But, as He always does, God continued to guide us and provide for us.  We were soon matched with a birthmother in Florida who had chosen an adoption plan … Continue reading

Growing from 5 to 11! {Family Friday}

In 2009 we started the adoption process for two siblings from Ethiopia and received a matching grant from Lifesong. We brought the kids home January 2011, but knew God also wanted us to adopt an older boy who was alone and about to age out of the system. We didn’t yet know who, but kept praying. Early in 2012 God began to reveal our “other boy” and he was miraculously home that October! Then the next October (2013), while our oldest boy and I were at Shriners Hospital having surgery on his leg, it was revealed to us that now his 3 younger siblings were at the orphanage. Oh boy. But we prayed hard again, along with some close friends, and believed God wanted the kids to be together. So we started the paperwork process again in January 2014, and against all odds (including the our state who rarely says … Continue reading

He clearly led us to this place… {Family Friday}

We began our adoption process in January of 2011, expecting to adopt a child from the country of Haiti. We began working with Lifesong in late spring or early summer of 2011 – by receiving a matching grant from our local church and also fundraising assistance.  In early 2012 God closed the door on that adoption and we spent several months prayerfully considering our options. God used a dear friend of ours, who is a fellow adoptive parent and has been blessed to work with Lifesong, to introduce us to an amazing lady to runs a special needs orphanage in Ghana called Beacon House. In the fall of 2012 we applied to adopt through Beacon House and in April of 2013 we had passed court and were well on our way to bringing our son home. We hit a few paperwork snags, but in February of 2014 his visa was … Continue reading
