Family Found! | Guatemala

Some days the work we do is heartbreaking. Other days we literally weep with joy. Recently our Village of Hope Guatemala team was able to sit with one of our 18-year-olds who has spent her entire life in an orphanage (she joined us at at age 15) and tell her that we found her family. Her paperwork stated that her mother–who was 14 when she gave birth–was now deceased and that there was no other family … and yet our social worker, Rosalinda, worked many extra hours never giving up, going above and beyond, and continued to search–finally locating an aunt and a grandmother last week. She did a home visit and they are a precious family who had also been looking for our 18-year-old throughout the years. Her grandfather was also committed to finding her, but unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago. Searches take money and they didn’t always … Continue reading

Hope Changes Everything | Guatemala Update

Enjoy this update from our Guatemala team– Gabriella was just 4 years old when she remembers learning that her father was sick. “Well,” she thought, “as long as he’s stuck in bed, he won’t be able to hit me.” Gabriella had no idea how this sickness would affect her for the rest of her life. Shortly after her father got sick, her family ran out of money and little Gabriella was sent to the streets to work, selling candies and packs of cigarettes–or sometimes stealing–to survive. It was cold and dark, and she had to run into alleys or hide in gutters to protect herself from abusers, because she couldn’t return until she had enough money. Her father’s condition continued to worsen, and she noticed her mother, too, was looking weak. When Gabriella was 7, her father passed away. Curled up in the fetal position next to the casket, Gabriella … Continue reading

One Question that Changed Her World | Guatemala Update

Enjoy this update from our Guatemala team– I saw Zuly bend down and quietly whisper in the little girl’s ear. “You are so smart,” she said. The little girl looked up to her and smiled shyly.  At the age of 3 months, Zuly began living in an orphanage. It was all she had ever known. Caregivers had come and gone; friends had, too. Nothing in her life had ever been stable. Some children were adopted, others were sent to different homes. Some were reunified with their biological families. Zuly knew nothing about her past. Sometimes she would allow herself to dream. She would dream that one day her birthmother would walk back through the doors of the orphanage and come for her–that she would pick her up, spin her around, hug her tightly, and tell her that she had missed her every single day of her life. Most days though … Continue reading

Hope Campaign 2015 – FUTURE

Please enjoy this update from Village of Hope, Guatemala– I remember the day so well, she said. It was just days after my 12th birthday. My mom had left early that morning for the market. I was outside playing in the dirt with the marbles I had received for my birthday. My little brothers and I were laughing. One marble rolled down the hill and into a patch of grass. I was looking for it when I heard him call my name. The sun was hot on my back. I tried to act like I didn’t hear him as fear trickled up my spine. He had been looking at me in a different way lately. I tried to pretend I didn’t see it. My mom said she needed to stay with him in order to pay the bills. She said he was our only hope. She was wrong. He put … Continue reading

Hope Campaign 2015 – FAMILY

From Village of Hope, Guatemala– She lived only 31 days. A tiny baby girl, abandoned at birth. She was born with only 10% of her brain. There was no hope they said. In 31 days this precious baby girl’s life changed many lives, including  mine. She taught us that you can share the gospel without saying a word. She showed us how to trust, how to love fully, and how God has a purpose for every single human no matter how weak or frail. She taught us that greatness doesn’t come from riches, from intelligence, or from power–that greatness comes from a life lived for Him. She showed us that having things means nothing in the end–and that loving someone who can give you nothing in return is the greatest kind of love. She confirmed to us that FAMILY has nothing to do with being blood related and everything to do with who … Continue reading

Hope Campaign 2015 – FAITH

Please enjoy this update from Village of Hope, Guatemala– She is His promise. A bright little star. I sit and I watch her dance. Twirling around the room. The smile on her face says it all. Her dance is a praise to Him. The One who saved her. The One who gave her hope. I will never forget the day we met. They had called us to ask us about accepting a possible transfer. She had grown up in another Children’s home but was causing them too many problems. Her attitude was bad they said. She wouldn’t listen. It was time for her to go. As I sat at the table next to her and watched the tears stream down her face, God allowed me the privilege of seeing her as He sees her. What she could be- if only she knew. We told her about Village of Hope. She … Continue reading

The Picture of Unconditional Love

Enjoy this update from our friends in Guatemala … Alex and Clarity are the house mom and dad of Casa Dos. They not only parent their 3 biological daughters, but also the children who call Village of Hope their home now as well. House parents who have a heart for the children and a heart for Jesus are, hands down, our biggest prayer request. Our desire is to find people who are willing to give their all, including their heart, without holding back, to the children who come to Village of Hope and need just that. To be loved fully and unconditionally–just the way they are. The other day, I walked into Casa Dos and had to catch my breath as I realized just how fully the Lord had answered our prayers. The table was set with a colorful Guatemalan table cloth. Alex was preparing his sermon for Sunday while … Continue reading
