Using Business to Sustain Orphan Care

A common goal for any orphan care project is to become self-sustaining and thus, less dependent on donor dollars. Several of our orphan care initiatives have been growing towards sustainability through businesses that have been set up in country. Although it presents unique challenges, there can also be great opportunity.   “While working in sustainable business, you need a mission heart and a business mind.” –LUKE GUDEMAN, Farm Manager | Lifesong Farms-Zambia  Here are some basic principles we have learned through our years of experience that can help in making a sustainable business succeed. We’d love for you to join the conversation, sharing principles that you have used or seen used for business as mission. General Sustainable Business Principles…  1. APPROACH AS BUSINESS. Develop a business plan with organized structure.  Understand local markets. Be financially prepared & accountable.  2. Orphan Graduate to Orphan Advocate

As you saw in Dima’s video above, orphans in Ukraine often grow up without strong, positive role models speaking into their lives. Our staff in Ukraine is working to change that in several orphanages through their Constant Christian Presence (CCP) program. The staff and volunteers serve over 1000 children, through mentorship, camps, transition homes and business opportunities through Lifesong Farms-Ukraine.  Dima and many other graduates who grew up with CCP are now giving back and speaking into the lives of children that are in the orphanages today. As Dima has gone from Orphanage Graduate to Orphan Advocate, he has recognized the opportunity that Christ has given him to speak into the lives of these kids and share the Gospel with them! Will you join us in helping impact a life like Dima’s? Meet Koyla*, an 11-year-old boy who is being ministered to by our staff while he lives within the … Continue reading

Bearing Fruit Through Lifesong Farms {Mission Moment}

Lifesong Farms. We are thankful, with the help and expertise of our friends at Plant Sciences, Inc., to have active strawberry farms in Ukraine and Zambia. Our hope is to not only create jobs & self-worth for orphan caregivers, but also  provide future employment opportunities as orphans grow into adults. Eventually, we aim to establish sustainability to help fund on-going orphan care. Hear the stories behind the farms… Bearing Fruit in Sergey {UKRAINE} Like each and every child our Ukraine team reaches out to through Constant Christian Presence, Sergey was full of potential. Coming from a life of hurt, God breathed hope into his heart and life. Through the team’s support, mentorship and love, Sergey came to know Christ while developing relationships and life skills that is leading him towards a fruitful future.  Now, he and another orphan graduate are involved in helping manage a nursery, as well as play an … Continue reading

Giving Hope to the Hopeless {Lifesong Ukraine}

Please enjoy this update from Lifesong Ukraine…   One of our recent highlights was a camp for children with special needs at our camp horse farm. It was a great week for the children who don’t have much in this life! Not much in terms of what State run institution offers as well and what future holds for them. The State Social Care Program is designed to keep them in the orphanage until they are 28-30 and then transfer them to a State nursing home to live until they pass away. Many of these children have down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy or other mental disorders. But, many of them are very smart and capable to function in our society, requiring some supervision. Most importantly, we see that many of them understand God’s plan and are very receptive to the Gospel.    Horse therapy is one of the key elements of the program with these … Continue reading

Emptying Orphanages in Ukraine Through Adoption

Please enjoy this update from Denis Poshelok, Lifesong Ukraine Director, as he shares the success of the recent Ukraine National Adoptive Conference. Many of the adoptive families that attended are not only being supported by their local church, but also by American churches through Adoption Without Borders, an intentional program to link like-minded families and churches in the USA with Christian families in the Ukraine who are seeking to adopt. Please join us in lifting up these families in Ukraine as they seek to ’empty the orphanages” through indigenous adoption. “Last weekend we had another great event at our camp – semi annual National Adoption Conference.  About 20 families have attended, this time they came with their children, 62 total! Lots of work to host such an event but definitely joyful! There were two separate events in one – Empowered to Connect training for the adults/parents (both adoptive and potential) and horses, … Continue reading

First Harvest Is In! // Lifesong Ukraine

We invite you to share a word of encouragement to our staff at Lifesong Ukraine. To do so, please comment on the blog or on our Facebook wall and it will be forwarded to our staff. Thank you in advance for your kind words of support! Please enjoy this update from Lifesong Ukraine… Last month we started to harvest our first strawberry plot of 1.5 acre. It has been a true blessing to see how these plants are producing as much fruit as last year and even more. Daily harvest is small at this point (600-800/day) and growing little by little. We are anticipating the peak at 2,200 pounds/day in mid July – early September. Please be prayerful for a good harvest, good market price and our work team led by Sergei. We are confident, everything is in His hands! Special thanks to Plant Science, Inc. and Lifesong Ukraine Board for their continued support and partnership! And, most important, we … Continue reading
