A Word to the Weary Mom

Dear weary mom, Today is International Women’s Day, but I don’t expect you to know that since you spent your morning rushing around trying to prod your children to eat their breakfast or get ready for school. (Whoever invented the phrase “herding cats” never had children. “Herding children” needs no fancy idiom.) After a drive across town–in which you answered a dozen questions on deep subjects requiring more than simple soundbites–you sent your kids into the clutches of their familiar morning routine, breathing out a prayer for their safety. You smell faintly of peanut butter or tears, depending on the day (or hour!), but no matter. You worry, instead, about your sensitive child who wears his global development delays on his sleeve, and you hope the other kids in his life tread lightly today. You’re tired, and I understand.   So, about today. Today is supposed to be a global day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural, … Continue reading

Things that [May] Be Different about Adoption

I can’t pretend to know what it’s like to grow a human for 9 months, then birth it, and listen to the world throw advice. But here are a few things I think may be different about adoption than birthing a biological baby. Our parents didn’t wait in the hospital waiting room and light cigars. Our parents waited with us for sure–a year and a half. But when it came down to delivery, my son didn’t come from my body. We heard over the phone that he was born and healthy. We were thrilled but with open hands, knowing he may not be ours two days later. Our parents waited to meet him until we left Texas (we had to wait for paperwork to clear before leaving the state) and then waited while we bonded for 6 more weeks. Becoming instant parents was wonderful but also took consideration from others … Continue reading

Is God Angry With Us?

Read along as guest blogger & adoptive mother, Suzanne Gowin shares lessons God has taught her through their family’s journey of adoption…. Because of an interview this past weekend, I was reflecting on my personal discovery of Isaiah, back in the spring of 2010. I remember with fondness a short season I had with all the kids in school (before the new ones came), chores caught up at home, and available time to spend hours in the Word. It was a season where I eagerly and purposefully pleaded, “Lord, please reveal to me your heart, so I can be more like you.” I will honestly admit that this is often not how I come to Scripture, but it truly was during that season. My journey began with Isaiah 1, where I was blown away. I had never seen language like this to describe God. God is ANGRY with his people! … Continue reading

From One Momma to Another…

We’re thankful to welcome back guest blogger and adoptive mom, Nicole Schmidt. Please read along today as she shares her heart for her fellow adoptive mama… Sometimes adoptive parenting, and more specifically mothering can be a lonely road.  A week ago I had the privilege of attending a conference that was strictly for adoptive moms. Each mother was unique, and had a different story of adoption to tell—it was beautiful.  Standing in this huge room, singing worship songs with 450 mothers– I saw faces of women that I had never met, but I knew them. I could instantly recognize myself in their faces.  The mom dreaming of a child far away, imagining a new chapter in her life. The waiting mom who has this fire in her belly for a child she hasn’t even met yet.  I know you. The weary mom, fighting back tears and looking for rest. The … Continue reading
