Why Dads Are Vitally Important to Orphan Care

It’s no secret that the orphan care space is dominated by women. God has created women to be nurturers, and many are doing good work nurturing vulnerable children. But God has called men to a specific task as well–to protect and provide for our families and to help father the fatherless children in our midst. In May, a group of dads gathered at CAFO2017 to discuss their role. Specifically, they answered the who, what, how, and why of men in orphan care. Here are some highlights– The Who “Why are men important in orphan care? You’re the spiritual leader of your home, and this is a spiritual crisis. 340,000 children in foster care is a crisis of epic proportions.” –Scott Lundy, Arrow Child & Family Ministries The What “I had a watershed moment where God dealt with me, saying, ‘J.T. what’s important in life? What’s not going to rust? What’s not going to burn up? And what’s not going to blow away?’ –the life … Continue reading

Book Review: The Orphan, The Widow & Me

Few stories have as much potential to change the way we live as those where God redeems deep heartache for His glorious, eternal purposes. Such is the case with JT Olson’s The Orphan, the Widow & Me. When 12-year-old JT became an orphan after a horrific accident, he couldn’t possibly have understood what God had in store–how the God he did not yet know planned to redeem every bit of the hurt, grief, confusion, and loneliness to impact thousands of families, children, and widows for generations to come. But that’s often how God chooses to work–in the details we don’t fully comprehend. As The Orphan, the Widow & Me demonstrates clearly page after riveting page, often God delights to draw the straightest lines from our deepest griefs to our greatest opportunities. As JT grew, so too did his heart for the vulnerable. His own journey of adopting his daughter, Grace, in China gave him deeper insight into the emotional and financial hurdles … Continue reading

One Thought that Gripped Our Hearts | Family Friday

When we began the process to adopt, we were overwhelmed at the thought of the cost (to say the least!) … A good friend of ours, who is also an adoptive father, said that when he was adopting he had this thought: “I have a daughter in China and I MUST get her no matter what. If someone kidnapped any of my children and demanded a huge ransom, I would sell everything and do whatever it took to ransom their freedom. Be prepared for this mindset to grip you.” That thought alone gripped our hearts the moment we heard it. We stepped forward with trepidation, prayerfully asking God to provide and affirm our choice to adopt. And wow was He more than faithful! When we did our Both Hands project, it was the most amazing experience to see so many of our friends and family come alongside us in support. … Continue reading

From Our Family to Yours: A Word to the Undecided

In Chad and Kelly’s words– God had a plan for our sweet son all along. We began communicating with our birth mom in August and were able to be with her in the hospital for the birth. We’ve continued communication through a dedicated Facebook page for our son. She enjoys the updates and pictures, and it gives her reassurance that he is in a loving and happy home. I was so apprehensive when we started this journey about having any contact with the birth mom (or dad or both). I’m so glad God changed our hearts. We have so much information to share with Bohdi as he grows, and he will be able to feel a sense of belonging not only to us but to his birth parents. They love him and wanted the best for him, and I’m so thankful we had the time we did to communicate and share with … Continue reading

How a Village Raises Funds: 3 Resources | Family Friday

Our adoption journey to bring Shambo and Kemal home began less than 6 months after we arrived home with our first adopted son, also from Ethiopia. We had absolutely no idea how we were going to fund the adoption costs, but we knew that if God was calling us to it, He would lead us through it. When we were able to travel to Ethiopia less than a year after seeing their photo for the first time, we were amazed by how God weaved everything together. We spent nearly 3 ½ weeks in Ethiopia, as a family of 8, completing the process to bring Shambo and Kemal home. From the first moment we met them at the Care Center, we knew that God had put everything in place for that moment. It was an instant connection. Now, home almost 2 years, we can’t imagine life without them in our family. We are amazed that … Continue reading

A Reason Not to Adopt? | Family Friday

I lost my job of 9 years in the middle of our process right as we were getting matched with the child we were pursuing. If it weren’t for the AMAZING Both Hands project and the matching grant we wouldn’t have this sweet boy in our arms today! God truly provided in EVERY way and HIS hand is SO clearly seen in our adoption process. I know without a doubt this was His will for our family! So grateful for everyone who contributed to make this dream come true! Yes, every time we started to doubt because we were so financially strapped God came through. I was sweating the legal fees and upcoming travel costs when we found out that people had donated enough in our Lifesong account that was matched and we could get it sent to our agency! Even in the small things (for instance, we would have … Continue reading

And Yes, ALL These Kids Are Mine | Family Friday

Lifesong has been by our side through two adoption processes/four adoptions! In 2013, we embarked on our journey to bring home two children with special needs from China, and Lifesong provided us with an interest-free loan. Several months after those children were home in 2014, we began the process to adopt two 9-year-old girls, also from China. Lifesong was a “life-line” as they partnered with Orphan Care Alliance to give us a matching grant. We were also thrilled to participate in our first Both Hands project! What an amazing provision by God! Physically and emotionally, He has sustained us through difficult times. We have one child who doesn’t yet comprehend genuine attachment. He was moved four times during his first four years of life, and had many caretakers come and go. God gives us strength to work through the hardest of times. One of our daughters who came home at age … Continue reading
