5 Simple Ways to Become an Adoption-Friendly Church

Many churches claim to be pro-adoption, but they do little to actually support adoption. The good news is, it isn’t hard to become adoption-friendly. Here are 5 ideas to get started: 1. Pray for adopting families and waiting children. If your church prints a regular prayer sheet, consider including the names of families in process. Not only will this keep waiting families in the minds of praying people, but it will encourage the church family to ask for updates. If you do not currently have waiting families in your church, consider sharing adoption-related requests during times of corporate prayer. Furthermore, pray for God to raise up families in your church who are eager to adopt waiting children. 2. Encourage the church body to use their gifts to support adoptive families. Adoptive families need more than finances. Additionally, they need babysitters, encouragement, resources, and prayer. Everyone in the church can provide something to an adoptive family–even if it’s simply … Continue reading

A Child Worth Fighting For | Family Friday

Meet Chandler and Griffin. In their words … In 2011, we attended The Church at Brook Hills under the leadership of David Platt. The Church at Brook Hills is a huge adoption/foster care advocate. We felt like the Lord was calling us to orphan care, and so, after much prayer, we started a domestic infant adoption in 2011. During this time, we became pregnant with our second child. This put our adoption on hold but allowed us to pray more about what adoption looked like in our lives. We ended up feeling called to switch to international adoption, more specifically, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We were matched with our son in May 2013. Little did we know, actually bringing our son home would require the fight of our lives. Our son was in an orphanage where he was not receiving proper care. The orphanage shut down and our … Continue reading

5 Encouraging Truths for Your Adoption | Family Friday

God calls us to encourage each other. In God’s good design, He uses the testimony of other people to encourage us that He is good and in control and working things together for our good (Romans 8). To that end, 5 families who recently brought their children home with the help of adoption matching grants share examples of God’s goodness during their adoption process. 1. Meet the Wennigers–adopted from the U.S. “We had a match with a potential birthmother and it fell apart. And while that was such a hard thing to go through, God continued to show us His plans are the best. When our son came into our lives we understood!” 2. Meet the Wilhites–adopted from India  “God provided financially for our adoption in full. This was done so through fundraisers, grants, generous donors, and t-shirt sales. It seemed like such a daunting task, but when we put our yes on … Continue reading

Raising Funds and Finding Gold | Family Friday

The prospect of raising adoption funds is rarely an enjoyable one. For a variety of reasons, many families struggle to ask friends and family for help when paying the astronomical expenses associated with adoption. The fear of making people uncomfortable weighs heavy. Jeff and Liza (pictured above) understand. They recently brought their daughter home from China. Having not requested any grants during their first adoption, they decided to apply for a grant during their second adoption and see what God would do. In their words– We are extremely grateful for the matching grant we received from Lifesong. We were shocked to get the grant, and the funds came quickly when they were available. Lifesong made it so easy! When we asked, specifically, why a matching grant made the process of raising funds easier, they explained– Knowing there were dollars available to us motivated and encouraged us to get the word out. We think we were … Continue reading

Best Thing About Being a Dad

Very few life experiences mimic the gospel as closely as adoption. The Andersons know first-hand that, in adoption–as in salvation–God sovereignly interrupts the logical order of things as He lovingly orchestrates a new and chosen path for His child. Adoption is not without its pain, but done correctly, it is not without its blessings. Recent Barna research revealed that 77% of practicing Christians believe God’s people have a personal responsibility to adopt. While this statistic is encouraging, current trends also show a 35-year-low on international adoptions. The insecure national economy plus complicated adoption processes may contribute to this decline. Despite the numbers–and due, in large part, to your faithful and enthusiastic support of the fatherless–Lifesong continues to see churches and families embracing adoption for the good of the vulnerable and the glory of God. Over 5,000 families have received adoption funding support, and since 2011, at least 95 churches have partnered with Lifesong to help … Continue reading

It’s Time to Celebrate!

Outside the Walls has met a new milestone! As many as 153 million orphans world-wide are trapped in a cycle of hopelessness. Adoptive families all over the world wish to bring fatherless children into their family, however, finances often pose great obstacles or even cause good families to walk away from pursuing children in need. Unfortunately, churches don’t always have the funds necessary to help adopting families in their church. The needs are great and the resources are limited. Out of this need, Outside the Walls, a ministry of Lifesong’s church fund partners was born. The goal? —Reach more children together than each church is able to do alone.  Rich Metcalfe, Program Director at Lifesong, oversees church and fund partner relationships– Over the past 5 years we have seen our church and adoption fund partners grow in their willingness to reach out to give financial assistance to families from Outside the Walls of their … Continue reading

Adoption: Amazing and Messy | Family Friday

Our church, The Church at Brook Hills, has played a huge role in our lives in displaying the biblical truths about adoption and the fatherless, and opening our eyes to the Lord’s command in regards to this. The Lord placed adoption on our hearts throughout our engagement, but after two years of an infertility journey, we felt the Lord strongly leading us to close that door and to begin praying about adding to our family through adoption. We eagerly began the adoption process in the summer of 2010, feeling led to the country of China. Our first precious little girl, Karlye, was placed in our arms in June of 2011. Karlye has been such a blessing to our family and has taught us so much more than we could have ever imagined. She is a beautiful, smart, funny, kind-hearted and determined little girl. She was an amazingly brave little girl … Continue reading
