Hope on the Horizon: Remembering Dr. Karyn Purvis

1 year ago today, Dr. Karyn Purvis–internationally renowned child development expert, popular speaker, author, and passionate advocate for vulnerable children–went to be with the Lord. On August 20, 2014, several of foster care’s leading thinkers met in Oklahoma City to share ideas that are making a difference. Dr. Karyn Purvis–with her trademark compassion and her hair cut short from the effects of cancer–shared many thoughts with the group. Here are a few highlights– God has a plan. We serve a God of extravagant love. It’s the God of extravagant love that we see in the Gospels when parents bring their children to Jesus. He scoops them up in His arms and He holds them and He blesses them. And He gives them all that He is. That’s extravagant love. This God that we serve also has an extravagant plan. And even when we don’t think the plan worked, there’s still a plan. This is the God … Continue reading

Empowered to Connect: 5 Valuable Take-aways

Editor’s note: Several weeks ago the decision was made to publish a post at the conclusion of the Empowered to Connect Conference this past weekend (April 7-8). The conference was a success, and we returned to the daily grind with no idea that God would call Dr. Karyn Purvis (director of TCU) into His presence just 3 days after her conference concluded. We have chosen to proceed with the post below because we believe it has the ability to encourage and inspire families to love children from tough places–which is what Dr. Purvis so successfully gave her life to accomplish.   Ask any of the thousands of people who attended Empowered to Connect over the weekend and you’ll receive just as many answers to the question, “What practical ideas will you take away from the conference?” Here are 5 potential responses: 1. “Do not go after a gnat with an … Continue reading

Helping Others Understand Your Child’s Needs

Do you have a child who has come from a hard place? Do you wish others who interact with your children better understood how to connect with them to help in their healing? Maybe you are frustrated with Sunday School teachers, babysitters, school teachers, parents of your child’s friends, or even some extended family because they just. don’t. get. it. And while we all know it’s not appropriate to fully disclose a child’s personal story to every person they will encounter, wouldn’t it be nice to make those in their daily or weekly routine aware of general issues and small ways they could make your child feel safe, pushing them towards success? From the insight and research taken some of the best books on this topic (The Connected Child by Karyn Purvis, The Whole Brained Child by Dan Siegel & Tina Payne Bryson, and The Out-of-Sync Child by Carol Kranowitz), … Continue reading

Host a LIVE Simulcast {Empowered to Connect Conference}

  The Empowered to Connect Conference on April 10-11, 2015 will feature researchers from Texas Christian University and experts in the field of research-based interviews for children from hard places. It will be an invaluable experience for professionals and families alike who seek to provide hope and healing to children who have been adopted or are fostered.  If you have experienced the transformation this conference can have on a family, offer this event to your friends and family…to your community.  Priced low ($199.99 for every church or adoption ministry), this simulcast is an opportunity to provide support to these families where most communities lack the experience, the expertise and the answers to those in desperate need for help and guidance.  Let your local pastor, counselor, social worker or ministry leader know about this special opportunity to host the Empowered to Connect Conference Simulcast!
