God Provides for His Children | An Update from Bolivia

Below, our team in Bolivia shares an example of what discipleship can look like to orphaned and vulnerable young adults in Bolivia—

At our home, the doorbell rang.

Rebeca* and Helena* had stopped by to say hello. We invited them in, offered them a meal and something to drink, and sat down to catch up. We enjoyed their company, and nothing stood out as unusual.

Fast forward a few weeks, and we realized the same event kept occurring. We began to ask ourselves why they would want to stop by. Are they bored enough to want to sit and have discussions with us older folks? Are they returning to watch the Christian music videos on our TV? Are they coming over to use our free wifi?

When we realized the answer to our question, we were speechless …

They were hungry.

Rebeca and Helena lived their whole lives in a children’s home and are now trying to figure out life as young adults. They face many obstacles—from past hurts to present frustrations—and as a result, their hunger doesn’t always feel that important.

But a plate of food can go a long way. It doesn’t just ease the rumbling in their stomachs; it soothes an ache in their soul.

Food will never heal their past hurts or promise a long-term solution, but it does say, “We see you and care about you,” and more importantly, “God provides for you and always will.”

We are reminded of the prophet, Elijah in 1 Kings 19 when he ran away into the wilderness. He fell asleep and an angel woke him, offering him freshly baked bread and water. He rested and was offered food and drink once more before beginning his forty-day journey up the mountain of God. In 1 Kings 19:7, the angel says to him, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”

For an orphaned young adult, the journey often feels like too much.

But just as God provided food for Elijah,

He provides both physical and spiritual food for His children in Bolivia, no matter their age. And just like Elijah, once their physical needs are met, it becomes much easier for them to continue the journey and hear God speak.

Our team stands by a four-part pledge to the children we serve. The first part of the pledge affirms our commitment to teach orphaned and vulnerable children the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ.

“Our Children” Will:

Be taught the Gospel and how to live as a follower of Jesus Christ

Not want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter

Receive a quality education to provide a foundation for their future

Experience continued love and support while transitioning into adult living

Let us give thanks to God that in Bolivia, there is always a plate of food available to whoever rings the doorbell, and with that plate, comes a Gospel message of hope and love. As Jesus declared in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
