Carried by God: National Foster Care Month

May is National Foster Care Month. Last year The Forgotten Initiative (TFI), Lifesong for Orphans’ foster care ministry, started something new with the launch of The Forgotten Podcast. Their goal with every episode is to bring voice to the foster care community. Jami Kaeb, Founder and Executive Director of TFI, has the honor of interviewing individuals who minister to the foster care community, serve on the front lines, or who have spent time in foster care as a child, like Nicole Argo. Nicole’s story At age seven, Nicole witnessed her mom being severely abused by a boyfriend. At this tender age, she already felt exhausted from life. In that moment, she wanted it to be over because she didn’t want to hurt anymore. She sat on the ledge of an open window in her apartment, dangling her feet outside. She remembers hearing God’s voice–even before knowing who God was–saying to … Continue reading

The Single Greatest Solution for Kids in Need

Spend 5 minutes with Jedd Medefind, President for the Christian Alliance for Orphans, and you will learn one thing very quickly: Jedd is an energetic, passionate advocate for children in need. He and his team are tirelessly preparing for this year’s CAFO Summit where attendees from 30 countries are expected to attend. Recently, he agreed to sit down with Jami Kaeb, founder/director of The Forgotten Initiative, Lifesong’s ministry to the foster care community, for an interview on The Forgotten Podcast. As part of their discussion, they talked about the single greatest solution in foster care and adoption–to see the church become God’s answer for kids in need–both here in the U.S. and around the world. There is nothing more beautiful than Christians who look like Jesus–who, despite their imperfections, are seeking to love others as they have been loved … in caring for kids that the world has pushed to the side. –Jedd Medefind … Continue reading

The Forgotten Initiative | Mission Moments

The Forgotten Initiative Celebrates 5 Years! We invite you to celebrate with us the goodness of God as The Forgotten Initiative (TFI)–the foster care ministry of Lifesong for Orphans–celebrates 5 years of bringing joy and purpose to the foster care community around the country! In 2009, God led Jami Kaeb, a busy wife and mom, to walk into her local state foster care agency and truly see the need of the fatherless in her community. Jami knew she could not fix everything for every child, but she also knew God delights in using willing servants with empty hands. She petitioned family and friends to help, and God did incredible things. It’s not that the church doesn’t care. The church doesn’t necessarily know how to help or that this community even exists.–Jami Kaeb God used the effort of one person who wanted to impact her community and–just as He did with … Continue reading

Foster Family’s Home Transformed {Project Renovate}

The Forgotten Initiative’s second Project Renovate of the summer was a great success! Watch the transformation below! In ONE day, over 40 volunteers came together and put up a new fence and roof, laid flooring, painted walls, cleaned, redecorated, prepped a bathroom for new plumbing, planted flowers….and gave foster mom, Laurie a fresh start! Laurie has been foster mom to her 7 year old grandson for over a year. She was committed to supporting him in every way she could but her home was falling apart around her. A chronic leaking roof made it impossible to have flooring in her living room and the consistent moister from the roof was causing the panelling to literally hang off the walls. There were several other projects she had been unable to get to – though she was deeply motivated and had tried a number of options. Her caseworker nominated her for a … Continue reading
